Ultrasound of the kidneys

When any kidney disease is suspected, modern medicine offers ultrasound, which is now considered one of the most informative.

Ultrasound has no side effects, is easily tolerated, and with its help, you can detect a variety of kidney problems: sand, salt, cysts, stones, tumors, problems with the development of this paired organ, etc.

This is a non-invasive method of diagnosis, and it is allowed to use at least daily, closely monitoring the dynamics of the patient's condition. Referrals for such a study are usually prescribed by a doctor. However, you can go through this procedure at will, going to a private diagnostic center or clinic.

KIDNEY ULTRASOUND: WHEN AND WHY IT SHOULD BE CARRIED OUT

The organs responsible for the excretion of urine from the body are more at risk of developing benign and malignant neoplasms, as well as the development of other pathologies, which can not always be determined even with a conventional ultrasound machine.

Therefore, an ultrasound examination may be prescribed by your doctor if:

  • the pain of unknown origin in the lumbar region;
  • discolored urine;
  • pain and discomfort during urination;
  • any deviations from the norm after their detection in the analysis of urine;
  • frequent and severe swelling of the legs;
  • suspected inflammation (cystitis, pyelonephritis, etc.);
  • various injuries;
  • anomalies in the development of the pelvic organs;
  • urolithiasis;
  • diseases of the genital system;
  • detection and sizing of tumors.

The adrenal glands are endocrine glands that are designed to produce adrenaline. The stability of their functioning directly affects the physical and psycho-emotional health of men.

However, adrenal ultrasound can be prescribed only if the doctor suspects or wants to rule out tumors or hemorrhages in the body. And all because the adrenal glands themselves are very small in size, and on ultrasound will be clearly visible when increasing in volume for any disease.

Ultrasound examination of the bladder, as a rule, should be performed at:

  • suspected or in order to exclude urolithiasis;
  • assessment of the conformity of the body to its natural form;
  • concomitant inflammatory processes;
  • determination of the volume of residual urine in prostatitis,etc.

Usually, doctors prescribe tests of several organs at once, because the urinary system works "comprehensively". And, if today's ultrasound showed no inflammatory process in the kidneys, it does not guarantee that it will not be in 12-24 hours, if the source of infection is, say, in the left adrenal gland.

Important to know! Often problems with the urinary organs are detected during pregnancy, as in the process of carrying a baby this organ receives a heavy load, and can easily be adversely affected by any infection.

If previous urine tests do not show very good results, the pregnant woman will be given an ultrasound to rule out all possible serious pathologies such as stones, infections of bacterial origin, and inflammatory processes.

PREPARATION FOR THE RESEARCH

Preparing for an ultrasound of the kidneys, bladder or adrenal glands is quite simple. The main thing is to follow a certain diet: for 3 days before the study you should refrain from eating sweet, fried, smoked, salty foods, as well as cabbage, legumes, and anything that potentially causes flatulence.

In the evening, the day before the ultrasound should not eat at all. 1-2 hours after a light snack you need to drink activated charcoal (or any analog) at the rate of 1 tablet per 10 kg of body weight. This is necessary in order to remove all gases from the intestine and make the urinary organs more "visible" to the ultrasound machine.

60 minutes before the appointed time of the study you need to drink 500 ml of clean water without gas or sweet tea. You should refrain from urinating.

FUNCTIONS OF CONDUCTING "ULTRASOUND" OF KIDNEYS

The process of ultrasound examination of the urinary organs is as follows:

  1. The person lies down on the couch and lifts his clothes (or strips to the waist) so that the doctor has access to the abdomen, sides, and waist.
  2. Then a little gel is applied to the examined areas of the body, which allows the sensor to read the data more clearly.
  3. The specialist guides the sensor on the patient's body, and ultrasonic waves begin to be reflected from the examined organs, forming an image on the display of the ultrasound machine.
  4. During the study, the doctor writes down all the important indications and then makes a printout-conclusion with their transcript.

The procedure usually lasts no more than a quarter of an hour.

RESULTS OF ULTRASOUND EXAMINATION OF KIDNEYS

Ultrasound of the urinary system can show the size, structure, and shape of the studied organs. Immediately after the study, the results are printed in a transcript and issued to the patient.

If a woman is pregnant, an ultrasound should be performed exactly on time, as prescribed by a gynecologist.

If during pregnancy the expectant mother began to feel a pulling pain in the kidneys, and urination does not bring relief or during it is felt pain, ultrasound should be performed urgently.

Among the diseases that can detect ultrasound of the kidneys, the following should be noted:

  • inflammation of the bladder;
  • jade;
  • malignant or benign neoplasm;
  • pyelonephritis of various forms;
  • stones;
  • cysts, polyps;
  • accumulation of salts;
  • sand;
  • problems with blood supply to organs.

A LITTLE INTERESTING DATA

In a person who has only one kidney from birth (or has lost it due to an illness/injury in adulthood), the second organ increases rapidly in size, trying to "work for two".

Nephrons (small parts of the kidneys responsible for filtration) stop working as the human body ages - 1% die each year after reaching the age of forty.

The resources of the kidneys are so great that every year 6,000 healthy people in the United States give one of their kidneys to family and friends, friends, and acquaintances. And this does not prevent them from living long and happily, without special restrictions on existence.
