intramuscular injection

Intramuscular injection is the most common and simple method of drug delivery to the human body. But in reality, it is very difficult for an unprepared person to carry out such a procedure. Moreover, in some cases, after this manipulation, various complications may develop. Therefore, only experienced medical personnel should be trusted with the injection.

INTRODUCTION SITES FOR INTRAMUSCULAR INJECTION

The most "popular" place for the introduction of any drug is the upper part of the buttock, the wide femoral and deltoid brachial muscle. How to find the right place to administer the medicine:

  1. If an injection is made into the buttock, it is visually divided into 4 squares. The drug is injected into the upper outer square - the safest area in which there are no nerves and blood vessels.
  2. When injected into the thigh, it is also divided into 4 parts, and the injection itself is performed in the outer square.
  3. If the medicine is injected into the shoulder, the arm must be divided into 3 equal sections from the elbow to the shoulder. The central region of the middle section is the most suitable place for manipulation.

If the procedure needs to be performed not once, but repeatedly, you need to systematically use different places - do not hit the points from previous injections and the space around them. Otherwise, an inflammatory process may begin, after which a seal forms at the site of frequent injections.

INTRAMUSCULAR INJECTION TECHNIQUE

The injection technique is familiar to absolutely every medical worker - from an orderly to a doctor. It is performed as follows:

  1. All the necessary “tools” are prepared: a syringe of the required “cubic capacity”, a drug in an ampoule, alcohol wipes (or separately cotton wool with alcohol). The needle is pre-checked for air permeability. If the drug is in the form of a powder for preparation, and not a finished substance, it is pre-mixed with the required doses with a liquid solvent.
  2. The ampoule with the drug is treated with alcohol at the place of opening, the drug is taken with a syringe. The needle, in this case, should not come into contact with the walls of the vessel.
  3. A place is selected on the body for medical manipulation, after which it is treated in a circular motion with cotton wool soaked in alcohol or an alcohol wipe. This procedure helps prevent the development of various complications after the injection.
  4. The syringe with the medicine is released from the air - it rises with the needle up, after which the piston is pressed. It is necessary to press until a little medicine comes out of the needle.
  5. With a sharp movement, the needle is inserted into the muscle, and injection is performed - the medicine, at the same time, is injected slowly, with a uniform distribution of force.
  6. The syringe is quickly withdrawn from the muscle. Extraction is performed at the same angle at which the syringe was inserted.

After the procedure, an alcohol wipe is applied to the injection site, the skin is massaged a little. It also helps prevent the development of complications that can be fraught with the most unfortunate consequences.

COMPLICATIONS AFTER INTRAMUSCULAR INJECTIONS

If the intramuscular injection is performed incorrectly, the patient may experience various complications - from mild to extremely painful and even dangerous. The most common of them:

  • Hematoma. It can develop when the needle has damaged a blood vessel (especially if the needle is inserted too quickly). In order to prevent the development of a hematoma, it is necessary to monitor the sharpness of the needle, as well as strictly follow the injection technique described above. If a hematoma has already formed, and alcohol compress should be applied to it or special ointments should be used.
  • Seal (infiltration). The first sign of an infiltrate is a visual swelling of the injection site and its soreness. The main reason is the constant injection of drugs through a syringe into the same place or the wrong technique for performing the procedure. To prevent the development of compaction, you need to choose the right injection sites and do not forget to alternate them. It is also important to control the temperature of the administered medication (prescribed in the instructions for the drug). For the treatment of infiltration, warming compresses and iodine nets are used.
  • Inflammatory process (abscess). In most cases, it develops when the rules for disinfecting the injection site are ignored. A very unpleasant complication, which is often accompanied by severe pain at the injection site, redness, and even fever. If you strictly follow all the rules of asepsis, an abscess will not appear. But if it has already begun, it is necessary to carry out surgical intervention.

Another common problem is the needle getting stuck in the muscle tissue. Occurs due to the breakage of the needle during the procedure. In turn, the needle may break due to its too deep insertion or muscle tension during the injection. To prevent this problem, the needle must be inserted no deeper than ⅔ of its length. In addition, the patient must lie down during the procedure. If the needle is still broken, it must be pulled out with tweezers or consult a doctor for surgical removal (if the needle is too deep in the soft tissues).
