Ultrasound of the female genital organs

Ultrasound of the female genital organs is one of the varieties of functional diagnostics of the pelvic organs, which is quite often used in gynecology. The main advantage of the technique is the ability to scan organs in several ways, each of which is highly informative when examining certain organs. Among the other advantages: absolute painlessness, safety (even pregnant women can do it) and high information content in terms of obtaining information about the female reproductive organs.

Ultrasound of the female organs is usually prescribed by doctors for:

  • identifying any violations of the menstrual cycle: delayed menstruation, too early onset of menstruation, lack of menstruation;
  • vaginal discharge of unclear etiology (and especially during menopause);
  • pain and discomfort in the lower abdomen;
  • suspicion of the development of various gynecological diseases: from banal cystitis (both acute and chronic) to neoplasms of the vagina, uterus, as well as endometriosis, ovarian cysts, endometritis, etc.;
  • the need to confirm or refute the preliminary diagnosis of "uterine fibroids";
  • monitoring the condition of the ovarian follicles during infertility treatment or at the stage of pregnancy planning;
  • long-term use of oral contraceptives or hormonal drugs;
  • installed intrauterine device to control its position and prevent complications;
  • pregnancy (such an ultrasound is called obstetric) to assess the condition of the fetus and timely detection of any abnormalities in its development;
  • urination disorders of a different nature (for example, frequent urination, urinary incontinence) and suspicion of diseases of the urethra.

Also, an ultrasound examination of the female pelvic organs can be carried out systematically for the purpose of prevention. This will help to identify various diseases at the earliest stages and, as a result, promptly cure them without any serious consequences in the form of infertility, etc.

PREPARATION FOR GYNECOLOGICAL ULTRASOUND

Depending on the type of examination (abdominal, transrectal or vaginal ultrasound), the preparation will be different (more on that below). Doctors usually tell you how to properly prepare for a particular type of examination. At the same time, they indicate the terms - the days of the menstrual cycle, when the ultrasound will be as informative as possible, and also compare them with the purpose of the study.
The goals of ultrasound of the pelvic organs and the optimal timing:

  • Erosion of the cervix, polycystic ovaries - the beginning (1 day) of the cycle.
  • Suspicion of uterine fibroids - immediately after the end of menstruation.
  • Endometriosis, etc. - before the onset of menstruation.
  • Folliculogenesis (monitoring) - 5, 9, from the 14th to the 17th day of the cycle.
  • Bearing a child - in periods 9-10, 16-20 and 32-34 weeks.
  • Prevention of diseases of female organs - once every six months or a year in the first days after the onset of menstruation.

During the monthly ultrasound examination is carried out only in extreme cases. This diagnostic method is prescribed for suspicion (or analysis of the effectiveness of therapy) for diseases such as:

  • oncology of the ovaries or cervix;
  • uterine fibroids;
  • neoplasms of unclear etiology;
  • pathology of the fallopian tubes;
  • cysts in the ovaries.

PREPARATION FOR ULTRASOUND OF THE PELVIC ORGANS

In total there are 3 methods of ultrasound examination of female reproductive organs:

  1. Transabdominal (the sensor moves through the wall of the peritoneum).
  2. Transvaginal (transducer inserted into the vagina).
  3. Transrectal (sensor is inserted into the rectum).

Most often, an abdominal examination is performed, but if the doctor insists on a different method, you need to properly prepare for the procedure. Consider how to prepare for each of the types of ultrasound diagnostics.

TRANSABDOMINAL

Before transabdominal ultrasound preparation will be as follows:

  • 3 days before the procedure, you need to stop eating foods that cause flatulence: cabbage, black bread, legumes, grapes, dairy products, pears;
  • if a woman has increased gas formation, you need to drink medicines to eliminate it (the doctor will prescribe);
  • before the ultrasound, the last meal should be at least 19 hours before (and it is worth eating easily digestible foods);
  • if the patient has constipation, before the procedure it is necessary to make an enema or take a laxative in the evening before the study;
  • 60-90 minutes before the examination, you need to fill the bladder by drinking 1.5-2 liters of clean water.

TRANSVAGINAL

If the doctor has prescribed a transvaginal ultrasound, you need to prepare for it in the same way as for a transabdominal one. But, it is not necessary to fill the bladder and refrain from eating an hour and a half before the study. Be sure to pay attention to the external genitalia.

TRANSRECTAL

Such a study is rarely prescribed, but if the doctor insisted on it, before the transrectal ultrasound, you need to clean the intestines with an enema or special preparations.
